This course explores all aspects of drawing from traditional to contemporary, looking at different approaches to the human figure based on short and long poses.

Students will be guided through observation, scale, composition, placement and colour in a friendly environment. This course is suitable for all abilities and provides the opportunity to draw from life.

This course is suitable for all abilities and beginners, with a step-by-step approach to get as close to an accurate rendition of the plant as possible.
Exercises and skills learnt can be used to complete the painting at home as everyone will be encouraged to work at their own pace.

Students will work outside (weather permitting) making small oil paintings of nearby river buildings and parkland with one-to-one support.
Tom will also be painting with you so you will be able to watch him work and discuss the techniques he uses. The course is suitable for anyone with experience in drawing (even if not having used oils before).

The enchantment of Chinoiserie with a combination of oriental blossoms, extravagant florals and use of gold and silver has become a trend within both traditional and contemporary settings.
Students will be taught a brief history of the art-form and supported to produce a Chinoiserie panel to take away.

This specialist course teaches the theory and practice of traditional iconography, from the religious history and symbolism to use in portraiture.

Setting off by boat from Barton Turf, students will be supported with their chosen medium to capture the spirit, light and colours of the beautiful Norfolk Broads.

An introduction to the basic skills of drawing onto metal, to prints being taken from the engraved surface via an etching press. Students will explore creating tones within the drawing through the technique of hand wiping the plate.

This course will teach the techniques of preparing to paint with egg tempera.
Boards are covered with several thin layers of gesso that are then sanded down to create a smooth and absorbent finish.

Students will be taught to create a portrait bust that is anatomically close to reality and is also descriptive of the personality of the subject with modeling to casting and finishing to presentation.

Driven by the art philosophy of ‘truth to materials’, students will be guided through the five ways to apply paint to watercolour paper and will put them into practice using a photograph supplied by the tutor.

From greetings cards to invitations and place settings, this course explores using handwritten texts in formal and cursive styles. Techniques for serifs, swashes and flourishes with quotations, poems or zoomorphic images will also be explored. Suitable for all abilities.

Students will make a small hard-back notebook on the first day and will be supported to develop their ideas more independently and creatively on the second day. The course will begin with an inspirational look at the tutor’s own collection of books, types of binding and samples. Materials and equipment are provided.
