About Us

Anteros Arts Foundation endeavours to support arts talent with opportunities for learning and exploring the visual arts in different mediums, promoting contemporary exhibitions and providing a space where people can explore and appreciate new work and the development traditional skills within a contemporary context.

With a small team of staff and volunteers, Anteros is always looking for further volunteers who share the organisation’s vision and passion for the arts.

There are two hubs of activity for Anteros. The Norwich city centre venue (Fye Bridge Street) which houses its gallery in a Tudor hall, the Anteros team and also offers a unique setting for room hire, meetings, events and weddings. The Bergh Apton arts centre is an ideal rural environment for weekend courses and focused study.

Anteros Arts Foundation was established in 2006 when John Hemmant (founding director) converted a dilapidated horse stable and dairy into a practical space for arts workshops and exhibitions and create a relaxing and enabling environment that complimented and animated the arts scene in Bergh Apton, such as the annual sculpture trail.

With an integral offer of arts courses in hand, Anteros began sharing its vision. Discussions took place in late 2010 and in January 2011, Anteros in Norwich opened its doors in the historic city centre venue previously known as The King of Hearts. Having an urban city centre site compliments the rural setting of the Bergh Apton Arts Centre well – with both locations offering courses and exhibitions that compliment their surroundings. The Norwich centre presents introductory courses (such as drawing and painting and traditional skills within the historic environment) and the Bergh Apton centre offers more able-skilled courses, weekend courses and ceramica and printing.

"The vision for the courses is of individual development - both in learning a technique but in developing their sense of beauty, ethetic and soul." John Hemmant, Director

The strong vision, supported and delivered by a committed team of staff, guest tutors and volunteers continues to grow:

  • To continue to strengthen the skills of those who come to learn at Anteros and to build the number of skilled practitioners.
  • To keep alive traditional skills in order that they can be used to express contemporary ideas.
  • To develop the both centres in Norwich and Bergh Apton as an artistic hub where artist can gather to explore their skills and the visual arts.

Why Anteros?

In mythology...
Anteros was the Greek God of requited love (when love is returned) and also known as the graceful avenger of unrequited love. As Greek mythology has it, being the son of Ares and Aphrodite, Anteros was to entertain his brother Eros in the understanding that love must be returned if it is to grow and prosper.

In the arts world?
Anteros Arts Foundation endeavours to present opportunities for those who appreciate and practice the visual arts – sharing and returning the same love and passion for the development of arts skills, technique and promotion of exhibitions.
